Social Media Strategy unveiled

I believe the social media strategy that is most efficient is already out there. I wrote my paper to discuss key points of how and why twitter helps expand small and large news outlets. I also focused on how the print industry came to where it is today in need of so much damage repair from the social media available. There are multiple ways to establish yourself on the web with blogs, twitter, facebook, websites, ads etc. But the only way these news outlets are going to survive is if we grasp the evolution of social media and get to understand it like we did the internet when it came on board.

Smoking Ban

Recent talk of a possible campus wide smoking ban has people talking. The current policy allows students and faculty to smoke in “designated areas” around campus. However, many disregard the areas and freely smoke while walking through the Quad. ASG senators are worried the second hand smoke is a health hazard to all students while others believe the ban would hinder their personal rights.

Some students think there are better routes to a healthy campus than having to revamp the smoking policy. (video below)

Another strong issue is the enforcement of the current smoking policy. Many students feel the rules are not implemented according to a recent universitystar article. If this is the way to go, making the campus a smoke free envoirnment then the school needs to enforce its current rules first before brining on a new policy that may only provoke those who do use the designated areas.

I currently work at the Mayors office in Austin under Mayor Lee Leffingwell as an intern. I attend press events, write media advisories, and participate in the daily communications part of Mayor Leffingwells job. Leffingwell announced Earth Hour in a press conference March 26 at the City Hall Chambers.

The recent social media frenzy between myspace, facebook, twitter and other online people gatherings have swept the web. Myspace may not have been the best way to sharing information but it still seems to be around both in college and older crowds. Facebook has made the largest mark in my opinion and will remain at large for many years. I dont see how another social media site could pop up that has more than facebook. I may be biased since I use facebook frequently but so do millions of others. I believe social networking sites are the new way of communication for business in music, economics, photos, and even between professionals. Sites such as linked in can be found packed with people trying to get their resume out there. Social networking will be around for ages, I just think it will take on many other forms before something new comes along.

The online shopping market has expanded to millions today. Amazon is one of the biggest online shopping websites that hosted mainly selling books. Selling things online became a form of business, in stead of the normal “online browsing.”

www.amazon.com represents one of the many forms of online success that has created one of the largest buying markets. These markets will only expand in the future and heighten the need for online shopping. People are already moving to complete online use and the capability of buying all gifts, items, and supplies online is a form a convenience that people love.

Wired Magazine called the online shopping revolution an “entirely new economic model” in which users can type in what they want and receive it in the mail. The use of online shopping also gets children involved with music. I-Tunes is a perfect example of one of the largest music markets that is used by all ages to get movies, tv shows, music and podcasts. The internet has so much to offer and that is reflected in the use of online shopping.

I know my father refuses to do any christmas shopping outside of his office on his laptop. I believe this form of shopping is growing and will not cease any time soon. However, online business can fluctuate greatly because there are many factors that contribute to the process.

For example, according to the video: Download-The true story of the internet Amazon was not always successful. The fluctuation in online buying put Amazon in a tight situation where they had to decide when and how to expand. Today, however the amazon website s still one of the largest online buying sites. Online commerce can also have a downside when it comes to using credit cards online and communication with sellers and buyers. How do you know you really are communicating with the sender? The video refers to perfect security being a necesity when buying online which is obviously an important thing when we arent all smart enough to understand not to give our personal information to just anyone on the web.

SXSW effects on Texas State

Reading through some of the posts on the www.sxtxstate.com website the first thing that caught my attention was the visual note taking. I laughed at first because when I was the beat reporter for the faculty senate i used to take notes of what people were wearing or if they had beards, glasses, etc to make sure I knew who I was talking about.

The photos presented on the post were funny becaue many of them had stick figured showing the workings of a story. Im wondering how this applies to journalism today and what more I can do to be apart of it. The idea of drawing a timeline of a news story sounds fun. I know there is a visual story telling course at Texas State, but i haven’t had the chance to enroll. I would like to see how this further works because sometimes words cannot tell the complete story.

The second post that i engaged myself in was the writing web content for a living post. I feel like with these blog posts we are making as a class we are too becoming apart of the world of web writing, sharing our thoughts, concerns, hopes and feelings. It is amazing how many people one person can reach with a creative blog post.

I especially found the part under Erin Anderson interesting as they said “writing for the web is unforgiving” SO TRUE. The human race is indeed impatient, in a hurry, and expect the best news at all times. We are all consumers and readers expect a constant distribution of news that they can lather up and tweet, facebook, and talk about. The design portion of web writing was also talked about in the post. Obviously the layout of a page needs to be eyecatching and easy for the consumer to read, otherwise they wont take the time to click on links, pages, and pictures.

Visual communication skills seem to be a large portion of what has been talked about at SXSW this week. Reading over the post, “Why words dont work” was interesting because it is true. Readers forget that writers have to engage themselves into the stories in order to provide an eye catching informative article. It is impossible to write without knowing what you are talking about. From kids we are taught to draw what we see, feel, and think. I agree with the writer of this post in that people lose the use of visual thinking when they grow up. But when do we stop visualizing and start writing? Personally when i begin writing a news article I imagine how the reader will pick up the paper, flip to the first news page and see the headline that then guides their eyes to the text that creates yet another picture in their mind. Is that now what we do anyways? Write to inform? I believe we also write to create a picture for readers so they can feel apart of the world.

There should definately be an APP for that…

It literally took me a week to decide what I wanted to create for my design an app project in my social media class. I asked friends and searched the web but to no avail did I find what I was looking for. Then this morning when I had to roll out of bed at 8:00 a.m. on my friday morning off to schedule interviews for my upcoming news articles at the University Star I realized something: THIS SUCKS.

As a result I began working on an app that is will be known as “The scheduler for Journalists.” It will also serve the purpose of not having to deal with administrative assistants when trying to schedule an important interview.

Here is a rough sketch of the face of the app:

The idea is that every person in a single persons database links their monthly schedules. A reporter can then just open the app, search for the interviewees, and simply choose and date and time to schedule the interview. The first page of the app also allows the user to choose dates and time they are available so only times they can interview will come up on the interviewees calendar. The ability to schedule these interviews without spending twenty minutes on the phone explaining why you need to meet with someone for an interview leaves time for oh I don’t know, other interviews and actually WRITING THE STORIES. So needless to say, an app that allows a reporter to schedule appointments within a database would make the exhausting world of reporting so much easier.
